COMMUNITY EDUCATION

PLANET EARTH CART

Keep Sugar Land Beautiful launched the Planet Earth Cart project in the fall of 2004 to provide mobile carts with environmental education materials to Elementary Schools across Fort Bend County.  The carts will be sponsored by area businesses, organizations and individuals.  Some of the items that will be found on each cart are:

Books:

  • Stellaluna
  • Recycle Every Day!
  • The Lorax
  • From Caterpillar to Butterfly
  • Will We Miss Them?

Games and Activities:

  • Nature Bingo
  • Rain Forest Adventure
  • Nature in A Nutshell
  • Garbage Pizza Curriculum (in class art project highlighting recycling issues)
  • Animals with accompanying learning messages

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

Keep Sugar Land Beautiful offers a schedule of Composting and Tree Care classes. These educational classes are open to all area residents interested in learning more about enhancing the environment through responsible yard care. To register for classes or to get more information, Contact Us.

Green Thumb-Tree Care: a 2-hour overview on tree care and tree selection. The session includes the basics of proper tree planting and tree care, including pruning and review of appropriate trees for our area. Participants will receive free Tree Care guide. There is no charge for class, but as space is limited, interested parties should contact KSLB to reserve a spot.

Saturday, January 23, 2005.  1 PM to 3 PM, Sugar Land Community Center (226 Matlage Way, Sugar Land, 77478)

Green Thumb-Soil and Composting: a 2-hour overview on the basics of soil and backyard composting.  Participants have a chance to see active composting at the YardWise demonstration site in Lost Creek Park. Participants will receive free Yard Care guide. There is no charge for class, but as space is limited, interested parties should contact KSLB to reserve a spot.

Saturday, March 19 – 10 AM to Noon, Lost Creek Park (3703 Lost Creek Blvd, Sugar Land, 77479)

Sunday, April 17 – 1 PM to 3 PM, Lost Creek Park (3703 Lost Creek Blvd, Sugar Land, 77479)

Vermicomposting Workshop: a 2 hr course on indoor composting with worms. Participants will complete a worm-composting bin during class to take home. The session will include composting basics and use for worm castings. There is a $10 fee for this class due in advance to cover cost of materials. Families or couples may register to make one bin at the $10 cost. Reservations must be made at least 1 week prior to class.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Keep Sugar Land Beautiful presents programs and sponsors activities in a variety of community settings.

Speakers Bureau
KSLB will provide speakers for your organization or in a classroom setting on a number of topics involving (but not limited to) recycling, gardening to enhance nature, composting and local environmental programs.  Presentations can be geared to various age groups and settings and timing can be adapted to the specific needs of the requesting group. YardWise Compost Demonstration Site
KSLB, working with a group of newly trained Master Composters, manage the Compost Demonstration bins and the YardWise site in Lost Creek Park. 

Resource Kits
KSLB has number of resource kits and curriculum available for loan to teachers. Materials are available in a wide range of subjects, such as:

  • Junior Master Composter Curriculum
  • Garbage Pizza
  • Major Rivers of Texas

Teacher In-Service Day Training
Periodically KSLB offers environmental curriculum at Fort Bend ISD In-Service day sessions.  Most recently, 30 teachers participated in the Junior Master Composter Curriculum to learn how lessons about composting could be incorporated into lesson plans.
