About Us
Our organization began in 1990 as the Sugar Land Recycling Advisory Board. The board was officially established by a City ordinance in June 1991 with a mission to promote and protect the natural beauty and environment of the City of Sugar Land by creating partnerships between volunteers and private and public sectors to improve and maintain the quality of life and to conserve public and natural resources through education, programs, and public awareness. The board’s name changed to the Sugar Land Recycling and Environmental Advisory Board to reflect an increase in scope and programs.
In 1992, the City of Sugar Land became a Keep Texas Beautiful affiliate and a Keep America Beautiful affiliate after the Recycling Advisory Board completed the required training. NALCO contributed the $2,000 certification fee.
In 1999 through a mutual decision with the City of Sugar Land, the Sugar Land Recycling and Environmental Advisory Board became Keep Sugar Land Beautiful, a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization. Our mission is to educate and engage everyone to take responsibility for the environmental health of our community.
Keep Sugar Land Beautiful is a Keep Texas Beautiful gold star affiliate and has received Sustained Excellence Awards annually since 2002.
Keep Sugar Land Beautiful received the 2001-2002 Governor’s Community Achievement Award in the population category for cities of 50,000-100,000 residents. The $130,000 landscape grant received from the Texas Department of Transportation was used to beautify the northeast corner of the intersection at US59 and Spur 41.
