Please consider volunteering to monitor water quality with the Texas Stream Team.

The Sugar Land Texas Stream Team was formed by Keep Sugar Land Beautiful and the City of Sugar Land. The Texas Stream Team is a network of trained volunteers who monitor local waterways and collect quality-assured information about natural resources of Texas. "The City of Sugar Land takes pride in our set water quality standards," said Stormwater Coordinator Jennifer Boone. "Texas Stream Team is an essential part of our community's approach to make citizens more aware of litter in waterways. Their individual impact can contribute to healthier, cleaner creeks and streams." Throughout Texas, more than 400 groups ranging from third graders to senior citizens have been trained as water monitors and collect data on lakes, rivers and streams.

Volunteers are asked to make a two-year commitment to monitor their site(s) monthly at the same time of day each month - monitoring takes approximately one to two hours. Volunteers under age 18 must have an adult complete training and monitor their site with them. Volunteers will be given water quality monitoring kits and trained to collect data that may be used to make environmentally sound decisions. Participants will complete three phases of training using a test kit that measures physical and chemical parameters in water.

"Volunteers are critical to the success of the Texas Stream Team," said KSLB Executive Director Vicki Gist. "This is the perfect volunteer opportunity for a family to spend some quality time enjoying the outdoors and making a difference in our community."

Phase I and II hands-on training will be held on Tuesday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Eldridge Park, 2511 Eldridge Road. You must register to participate prior to May 18. For more information or to register, please e-mail info@kslb.org.
