H-E-B/KTB Green Bag Grant
Keep Sugar Land Beautiful was awarded two H-E-B/KTB Green Bag Grants in November. One grant was awarded to provide two KSLB Planet Earth Carts to local elementary schools. The second grant was awarded to establish recycling of PET plastic and aluminum cans at First Colony, Fort Settlement, and Sugar Land Middle Schools.

Garbage is My Bag
Keep Sugar Land Beautiful in partnership with the City of Sugar Land, the Houston Galveston Area Council, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality brought the nationally recognized "Garbage is My Bag" show to the public and private middle school sixth graders in Sugar Land on May 12 and May 13.
Eco-Car Show
The Environmental Week activities hosted by Keep Sugar Land Beautiful and the City of Sugar Land included our second Eco-Car Show on Sunday, April 19 at Oyster Creek Park, from 3-6 p.m. The Eco-Car Show offered one stop shopping for an environmentally friendly automobile from several local car dealerships.
RePlant Texas Event

Keep Sugar Land Beautiful in partnership with the City of Sugar Land will hold a RePlant Texas Event on Saturday, October 24 to replace trees damaged by Hurricane Ike. Keep Sugar Land Beautiful received a $2,000 Half Price Books and Keep Texas Beautiful RePlant Grant for this project. Volunteers will be needed to help us plant five gallon native hardwood trees in Oyster Creek and Lost Creek Parks. Volunteer Registration will begin September 1.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rock: Sugar Land Earth Day Celebration
5:00pm - 9:00pm

Recycling Collection Event – 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
(located in the parking lot adjacent to City Hall)
- Eagle Electronic Resources will be on-hand to collect household electronics such as TVs, VCRs, stereos, computers, printers, keyboards, scanners, cell phones, digital cameras, pagers and PDAs for recycling and reuse. Both working and non-working electronic equipment will be accepted free of charge from Sugar Land residents, and each resident participating in the electronics recycling event will be entered into a drawing for a FREE 42-inch TV.
- The Fort Bend County Women's Center will be in attendance to accept donations of clothing and household items for resale at the Fort Bend County Women's Center PennyWise Resale locations. The revenue from the sale of these donations will assist survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The Fort Bend Seniors will also be on-hand to collect gently used items such as small electric appliances, bed linens, towels, blankets, and small tools for Fort Bend County senior citizens.
- Residents will also have the opportunity to bring their paper and media discs (CDs, DVDs, and floppy discs) for shredding by On-Site Shred, a document destruction company. Upon conclusion of the event, the shredded material will be recycled.
MYAC Environmental Activity Booths: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) selected an environmentally themed service project this program year, and the organization has partnered with the City to host a series of environmental activity booths on the Plaza at Town Square during the performance by Vocal Trash. These activities will include face painting, arts and crafts, and a recycling game.
Performance by Vocal Trash: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The City of Sugar Land and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful have partnered with Sugar Land Town Square and Republic Services to host a performance by Vocal Trash, a Texas-based group known for their unique combination of music, dance and comedy while utilizing recycled materials such as a gas can guitar and milk urn bass. The group has traveled all over the world performing at Earth Day events and state fairs, as well as private events for Corporations such as American Airlines and Cingular Wireless. Their performance appeals to all ages and will be a valuable addition to the Earth Day activities.

17th Annual Don't Mess With Texas Trash Off

Keep Sugar Land Beautiful's 17th Annual Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off will be held Saturday, April 10. Please make plans to help us pick up litter and keep Sugar Land beautiful – your help is needed! Groups and individuals of all ages are invited to participate. Registration forms may be downloaded. Registration ends March 26.
Adopt-a-Spot
The Adopt-A-Spot program provides an opportunity for groups to show pride in Sugar Land by volunteering to adopt a public area for the purpose of litter reduction and beautification. Keep Sugar Land Beautiful currently administers 23 Adopt-A-Spots in partnership with the City of Sugar Land.
Eco-Car Show
3:00pm - 6:00pm
The Environmental Week activities will conclude with the Eco-Car Show -- a collection of environmentally friendly automobiles from several local car dealerships -- on Sunday, April 19 at Oyster Creek Park, 4033 State Highway 6 South, from 3-6 p.m. In conjunction with the Eco-Car Show, the City is hosting the first of Sugar Land’s 2009 Concert in the Park series.
